Careers Advice for Law Students at Kaplan Law School

Our Law Careers Advice Service is available to you from the day you accept your place with us, until one year after your course ends.  Simply put, our aim is to proactively help you get you a Training Contract or Pupillage.

If you would like to book a one on one guided tour of our premises and facilities, with the opportunity to chat to our careers service, please contact Admissions Manager Mark Wall on 020 7367 6437 or m.wall@kaplanlawschool.org.uk.

A Career in Law

Our Careers Service is proactive and hands-on and reflects Kaplan Law School’s inclusive culture to provide students with the skill set they will need for a successful career in Law. Rather than giving remote, general advice, we will sit down with each student and gain a real understanding of the student’s background and achievements and discuss how these can be presented in the most positive way in any application. Realistic advice is given, enabling each student to formulate their own plan and strategy for a career in Law. Individual guidance is given to each student, throughout the year. Some students make weekly or fortnightly hour-long appointments - it is up to you how often you take advantage!

Once you get through to that all-important interview or assessment centre, we provide training on Interview Skills and Techniques, as well as workshops in other key areas, such as Negotiation Skills and Group Exercises.  We also run mock interviews which are specific to the firm or chambers to which each student has applied.  We do not offer generic mock interviews or careers advice; we tailor our guidance to each student.

Our Careers Service Manager  worked as a Graduate Recruitment & Development Manager in two leading City firms and maintains strong links with the profession.  Our Bar Careers Advisor worked for many years as a specialist legal careers advisor at one of the world’s best universities.  They are uniquely placed to support you with all aspects of applications and interviews, as well as providing individual careers advice.  Between them, our team has reviewed many thousands of applications and interviews and has supervised assessment centres.  They really do know what law firms and chambers are looking for and how you can make your application stand out.

The Careers Service is available to you from the day you accept a place on the GDL, LPC or BPTC, until a year after the course ends to assist you with your legal career search and advise on legal career opportunities.

Other than bespoke advice, the Careers Service has a full Programme of Law Careers Events each year.

We also offer you the following individual support:

  • Individual, confidential and regular consultations with our specialist team, which will encompass:
  • Guidance on how to formulate a law career plan and develop an effective legal career search strategy.
  • Guidance to which law firms or chambers you should make applications, taking into account your academics, achievements and skills.
  • Skills analysis and how to highlight what sets you apart from the rest.
  • Review of your applications and CVs for training contracts, pupillage, vacation scheme placements and mini-pupillage.
  • Interview preparation and mock interviews tailored to the firm at which you are interviewing
  • Notification of legal career opportunities, including training contracts, pupillages and work experience
  • Notification of networking events such as presentations at law firms, Inns of Court and careers fairs
  • Help with any other careers-related issues you may have, including further study, alternative careers and volunteering
