From the first day of your GDL, LPC or BPTC (formerly BVC), you will receive the highest standards of pastoral care and support. We have a proactive approach to student welfare and our personal tutor system means that we are able to work with each student on an individual basis to make the learning process as smooth as possible. Our excellent Law college in London location, premises and learning environment also help to create a sense of community on campus.
At Kaplan Law School, our emphasis is on you as an individual and our focus is on fostering a collegiate atmosphere. We organise our law course timetable to allow integrated classes where possible, ensuring all students work side-by-side in order to increase the opportunities for students to network with their peers and build relationships for their future working career as solicitors or barristers.
Legal careers service for legal training
Our bespoke approach to providing careers advice to help you during your legal training means that our students benefit from one-on-one workshops with our legal careers advisors, who come from legal backgrounds. They are able to provide an insight into what leading law firms are looking for in their trainees.
The facilities at our London law college
Our London law college building facilities and our personal approach of delivering legal training through smaller class sizes, provide a collaborative and social learning environment
We maintain an open door policy to all students and have achieved this through establishing both law tutor and careers offices within the main area of the school, making them easily accessible.
Our Professional Resource Centre houses extensive IT resources, as well as a traditional library, guaranteeing you access to all the resource and support you will need on your law course.
Personal law tutor system
We operate a personal tutor system. All students will be introduced to their personal tutor on the first day of their course. At key stages of your law course you will meet with your tutor on a one-on-one basis. This enables us to ensure you are happy with your progress to date, discuss any issues you may have and act upon them as necessary. Of course, you can drop in to see your tutor at any time throughout the year to discuss any matter in an informal setting.
Pro bono schemes
All students have the opportunity to engage in our pro bono scheme which provides you with the opportunity to practice your legal skills in context by participating in both local and international projects.
Debating & mooting
Every year there is an active student led debating and mooting society. Students have great fun practising and putting in to use their advocacy skills. Last year the debating teams met on a fortnightly basis to thrash out legal and topical issues. The mooting team ran a competition with several rounds culminating in a final judged by HHJ Chapple, Resident Judge at the Inner London Crown Court and Bencher of Middle Temple.
Kaplan provides mock court rooms for use by the debating and mooting society. Whilst this is a student society, teaching staff help train and encourage students.
Student counselling
We offer our students the use of a confidential counselling service through the Tavistock Clinic, located in Swiss Cottage. The Tavistock is free of charge to our students. Their multi-disciplinary team can refer students to the counsellor most appropriate to help them.
Staff - Student liaison committee
The SSLC meets once a term to discuss curriculum-oriented matters, with representatives also encouraged to raise any non-curricular matters such as social arrangements and sport. The SSLC is made up of student representatives and the GDL and LPC course leaders. The student representatives are elected by students themselves at the beginning of each academic year.
A healthy lifestyle is proven to enhance academic performance, reduce stress and give you a positive outlook. We want you to enjoy a full and varied life as a student, whether you are an elite athlete or complete novice. Each year a Sports and Social Committee is elected by the student body and we contribute to various costs for any teams set up.
Thomas Guy Club
Our students can also take advantage of a special discounted membership of the Thomas Guy Club, used by University of London students, amongst others. Situated within 5 mins walk of the Law School, facilities include a club bar with quiz nights and other activities, a fitness centre and 25 metre swimming pool.
