Nottingham Law School and Kaplan Law School:
Kaplan Law School is partnered with Nottingham Law School to offer Nottingham’s award-winning Legal Practice Course (LPC) and Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) in London. In the opinion of the profession and former students, Nottingham Law School’s courses are the industry gold standard. It is the only LPC to have consistently been awarded the highest grading of “excellent” by the SRA (and its predecessor, the Law Society) from the inception of the grading system in 1993.
Nottingham Law School’s Graduate Diploma in Law Course (GDL) has been adopted by the GDL’s governing body as the framework for other conversion courses.
Kaplan Law School also achieved the highest ratings in our first validation in December 2007.
We combine Nottingham’s teaching methodology and course design capability with Kaplan’s extensive educational and training expertise. The two sites share a common management team, teaching team and IT infrastructure.
By partnering with us, your trainees will receive the best GDL and LPC courses available in the heart of London.
The benefits of the partnership for your students are:
- Excellent results: in our first year, 94% of our students passed, with 42% obtaining a distinction, with a further 25% gaining a commendation
- A large experienced tutor team, based in London and Nottingham, focused on practice and commercial awareness
- Smaller class sizes than our competitors for our small group sessions (SGS) and our lectures (large group sessions or LGS)
- Our teaching methodology which guarantees each student more face to face with their tutor through our “Personal Tutor” system (link).
- Well designed materials, continuously updated.

Nottingham Law School’s LPC:
Our LPC is regulated by the SRA and seeks three broad objectives:
- To provide knowledge, understanding and application of core legal transactions
- To develop essential practical skills
- To allow specialisation by introducing electives during the latter part of the course.
In working with our client firms, our goal is to facilitate the transition that your future trainees must make from academic study to the practical application of law. It is our aim to train your students to be confident, commercially aware, practising lawyers, as well as teaching them to ‘think like a lawyer’.
We would therefore design a programme that:
- Introduces your students to the firm, its culture and how you will support them from day one of their LPC
- Could include a bespoke elective, based on your practice areas and clients
- Develops key legal and business skills through our firm-specific “Bridge To Practice” programme to give them a head start when they join you
- Helps students get to know their future colleagues and make those important links
- Dovetails with the primary aim of your future trainees achieving a high grade on the LPC.

Selecting a sole provider for the GDL:
Our teaching and learning methodologies and our focus on pastoral care that apply to our LPC cohort apply also to our GDL cohort. Our GDL groups have a real collegiate feel and benefit from an excellent Nottingham Law School programme.

On-going engagement in the learning and development of your trainees:
We would see the firm GDL and LPC relationship as only the beginning of our contribution to the development of your trainees in a learning continuum, encompassing postgraduate studies, the training contract at your firm, qualification and partnership.
The continuum could include:
